This book's section on citations is not small and not comprehensive. The advice it gives for formatting is meant for publishing papers with journals, which is not very helpful for the student. A lot of the book is spent giving rudimentary english lessons, such as the difference between n and m dashes and when to use semicolons. I find it pretentious and foolish of the American Sociological Association to publish a book on English grammar and writing style. Overall, this book was not as helpful as I wanted it to be and tried to give me a lot of advice that I did not want (and would not look for from sociologists). However it is a very small and rather cheap paperback, so the cost was minimal.Product details

Purchased for my daughter's college course!
I don't know about this book. Two of my professors required it, so I bought it. I have yet to open it. I've been using H & S' Pocket Style Manual.
This style guide has helped me immensely in my sociology courses. The book is laid out very well and covers every possible scenario. It also details the changes made between this edition and the last, as well as the similarities between the ASA and Chicago style which I really like. There is a helpful list of words to avoid and some great tips on writing style. This is a must-have for sociology students!
Very informative. However, the index could use some renovation to enhance the user experience by enabling the user to locate contents more efficiently.
I'm an academic editor for dissertations and I normally work in APA style. An old friend asked me to edit her dissertation in ASA style, so I ordered this guide. The physical book itself and the seller offered 100% satisfaction, but the content is weak. The style offers only general guidelines and does not cover many, many details of editing a scholarly document . The book is the best ASA has to offer, but if you have a choice of another style, choose APA.
There were several things I needed to cite in my one sociology course this semester that were not covered in this style guide, which is disappointing because it is the official style guide for the American Sociological Association. I would estimate that one in three assignments had something that needed citing that I had to scour the internet to find. I hope they release a new edition soon. It is not as comprehensive as the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, but I like the ASA system better. (As if I get a choice.)
